'She needs to stay in a hotel!': Husband and wife clash after wife refuses to give up her bed for her entitled 70-year-old mother-in-law

Setting boundaries with one's in-laws shouldn't be as challenging as it often is. If all parties are respectful and transparent about their individual needs from the outset, then establishing and adhering to those boundaries should not be so difficult. In fact, it seems that the vast majority of problems involving in-laws down the road could have been solved much earlier if members of both generations were realistic and truthful at the onset.

Of course, at the beginning, you want to impress your in-laws. You want to show that you're thoughtful and kind, not just to your partner but also to their family members. However, that does not necessarily have to come at the expense of your own needs. If that means setting a precedent that you need "alone time" when you visit or politely declining when you are being demanded of something beyond your comfort zone, then so be it! You will be far more grateful that you set that precedent early, before matters get serious.

In this instance, a woman's 70-year-old mother-in-law recently separated from her husband of several decades. She lived 1.5 hours away from her son and daughter-in-law but insisted on coming to visit more often while refusing to take public transportation. But that's only half of it. The real drama unfolded when the son suggested to his wife that his mother should sleep in their bed whenever she visited. That's when the wife put her foot down in ways that some folks online felt were crossing a line.

It's interesting how divisive this author's actions actually were. Yes, in theory, the minute you let your mother-in-law take your bedroom “once or twice,” you are potentially allowing for that to be the arrangement whenever she comes to visit. These days, that was more often than usual. However, some members of this online community are correct to point out that there needs to be a better arrangement for a 70-year-old woman than a shoddy air mattress. That better option is called… a hotel!
